About the Event
Autofiction, featuring new work by celebrated American artist, photographer and filmmaker Laurie Simmons, will be on display at the YoungArts Jewel Box. Autofiction offers some familiar themes from Simmons’ established aesthetic, while recognizing her as one of the first artists to seriously embrace the opportunities arising from Artificial Intelligence (AI). Inspired by the release of ChatGPT in 2022, and using the DALL-E algorithm to reconstrue, reconstruct and reimagine some of the artist’s earlier series, the exhibition presents her oeuvre in a new light, reinforcing the artist’s long-held desire to push the boundaries of traditional image making. To ensure that the images were never trying to mimic her photographic practice, Simmons instructed the AI tool via a pseudonym.
