YoungArts 2023-24 Annual Report

Letter from our President & CEO

Dear Friends,

The 2023-24 season was one of remarkable growth and impact for YoungArts, marked by record-breaking participation, field-shifting programs and transformative opportunities for artists across the nation. Through our signature programs, new initiatives and invaluable partnerships throughout the arts ecosystem, the year represented a strengthening of our resolve and efficacy in supporting artists at pivotal moments throughout their creative journeys.

YoungArts’ mission is to identify exceptional young artists, amplify their potential, and invest in their lifelong creative freedom. From recognizing hundreds of young artists through our national competition, to piloting a new professional development and financial skills curriculum, to distributing nearly $2.7 million to artists through financial support and employment opportunities, we are proud to continually evolve resources that provide artists with critical recognition and encouragement, and enable them to develop their practices, reach broader audiences and build sustainable careers.

None of this would have been possible without your generous support and investment in our mission. As you explore the stories and achievements outlined in this report, know that you are an essential part of this journey, helping us ensure a vibrant future for artists.

With gratitude,

Clive Chang
President & CEO
YoungArts

Identify

The 2024 YoungArts competition drew a record-breaking 9,232 applicants, representing the immense talent and creativity of young artists nationwide. From this pool, 660 artists from 42 states and territories of the United States earned the distinction of being named YoungArts award winners, gaining national recognition for their exceptional artistry and receiving critical early encouragement as they embark on their artistic careers. Of these winners, 227 had the unique opportunity to collaborate with peers and learn from industry leaders through National YoungArts Week in Miami and YoungArts Lab programs in Los Angeles and New York City. In recognition of their achievements, a total of $754,958 in cash awards was distributed among the 2024 winners.

Who did we identify in 2023-24?

Amplify

Catalyzing their artistic journeys beyond their competition-winning year, artists received transformative opportunities to advance their practices, expand their audiences and grow their careers. Pianist Adrian Zaragoza (2022 Classical Music) made his Lincoln Center debut in November 2023 alongside nine other accomplished contemporary pianists in Philip Glass’s The Complete Piano Etudes, curated and produced by partner Pomegranate Arts. In a collaboratively produced video feature, Zaragoza and fellow YoungArts alum and featured pianist Timo Andres (2003 Classical Music & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) discuss the philosophies behind their artistry and the unique experience of performing this iconic repertoire for the public.

Through partnerships with institutions across the country, including The Nimoy at CAP UCLA and New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA), 61 artists were supported with over $60,000 in payments for career-amplifying opportunities during the 2023-24 season.

Invest

Beyond fostering artistic opportunities, YoungArts provided artists with critical financial support in 2024, including cash awards, grants, monthly microgrants of up to $5,000, and fellowships. Through these initiatives, YoungArts collectively distributed nearly $800,000, offering sustaining support for artists’ creative endeavors. This season also marked the launch of Artist Resource Collective (ARC), a groundbreaking financial wellness program funded by the Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation and designed in collaboration with David Thomson. Led by artists for artists, ARC equips participants with essential financial tools and knowledge, reflecting YoungArts’ commitment to integrating financial literacy into artistic education. As a core pillar of YoungArts’ future work, ARC underscores the belief that empowering artists with financial skills is vital to their long-term success.
