WHAT
Miami native Mark Fleuridor’s works will be on display in Sunshine, YoungArts’ first solo exhibition dedicated to an emerging artist at the YoungArts Gallery during Miami Art Week. Inspired by his ancestral lineage and the subtropics and contextualized by his Haitian background, Fleuridor creates layered reconstructions of family, friends, home spaces and tropical plants to arrive at abstracted environments that investigate the underlying theme: the cycle of life. Co-curated by acclaimed artist Derrick Adams and YoungArts Associate Curator Luisa Múnera, Sunshine explores the progression of Fleuridor’s body of work and the narratives that emerge from his artistic method, which includes quilt-making, collages, and watercolors. In celebration of Miami Art Week, YoungArts will host a VIP breakfast on the iconic YoungArts campus, a private exhibition tour, and a conversation between artist Mark Fleuridor and exhibition co-curator and YoungArts Trustee Derrick Adams.

WHO

Mark Fleuridor (2015 YoungArts Winner in Visual Arts & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) was born and raised in Miami. Working with painting, quilting and collage, the artist explores his personal and familial experiences. Through his work and artistic process, Fleuridor dissects his own memories and generational narratives, ultimately coming to a deeper understanding of his family and community.

Baltimore-born, Brooklyn, New York-based artist Derrick Adams’s critically acclaimed work spans painting, collage, sculpture, performance, video, and sound installations. His multidisciplinary practice engages the ways in which individuals’ ideals, aspirations, and personae become attached to specific objects, colors, textures, symbols, and ideologies. His work probes the influence of popular culture on the formation of self-image, and the relationship between man and monument as they coexist and embody one another. Adams is also deeply immersed in questions of how African American experiences intersect with art history, American iconography, and consumerism.
