Our Commitment to Inclusivity

National YoungArts Foundation is committed to listening, learning and collaborating with artists, and to using its platform to advance equity, inclusivity and belonging within the organization and in the arts.

We believe in empowering artists to pursue a life in the arts so they can achieve their full potential, including the extraordinary ability to impact society. As we confront our moral responsibility to advocate for equity and justice for all, we must deepen our work to support to Black, Indigenous and artists of color.

Our actions and ongoing work:

  • Developing an inclusivity and belonging and an anti-racism action plan with measurable goals and timelines by July 2021, with deliverables beginning to be implemented by Season 2021-2022

  • Meeting regularly with all staff members and Maven Leadership Collective for professional development that prioritizes anti-racism, inclusivity, and belonging at YoungArts

  • Examining and reevaluating policies and practices at all levels of the organization, including governance, programming, fundraising, communications, recruitment and operations, and alumni engagement through a lens of equity

  • Continuing to diversify the board of trustees, leadership, staff, and funding sources

  • Listening to and engaging with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to respond to their needs and build meaningful partnerships

  • Acknowledging Indigenous land as a necessary step toward honoring Native communities, and engaging the Board of Trustees DEI committee, staff, alumni and partners to set measurable goals and a timeline for actions by July 2021

  • In partnership with MyWellbeing, providing a series of wellness experiences and support groups available at no cost to YoungArts winners and alumni, including ongoing monthly conversation spaces for artists of all identities, and for BIPOC artists, to convene

  • Offering workshops on anti-racism to the YoungArts artist community via YoungArts Post, a dedicated portal for award winner and alumni artists

We are committed to creating systems of accountability and transparency and will be updating this webpage regularly.

YoungArts exists to support artists, and it is because of them and the educators, parents, guest artists, supporters and staff that we have the privilege of experiencing transformation through the arts. By learning from missteps that have been and will be made, we pledge to move forward together on this journey with respect, concrete actions and the resolve for change.
